My question is: Can one of us sit in the back of a two berth motorhome, on a side bench without a seat belt? As we are being told different stories, some say yes and some are saying no. Could you please clear this up for us, what is the law?
Regards

After reading numerous confusing regulations, I would say the answer is no. If both front seats with belts are occupied then you could carry further passengers in the rear without belts.(Providing your camper is pre 2008) But if a belted seat is available, that must be used first. I am unsure what the exact law is on this, but would guess that Trooper has it about spot on. In any case staying belted for as much of the journey as possible makes extremely good sense. None of us ever get in to a vehicle, least of all our beloved motorhomes, and expect to have an accident, yet this is an ever present danger no matter how careful a driver you may be. If the worst should happen and you are unbelted there is an awful amount of space inside, in which you can fly/be thrown about in, the consequences of which could be horrific, is it really worth the risk if there are perfectly useable seat belts available?

Your motor home log book states how many seats although mine is 6 berth it states 4 passengers as the rear facing seats dont have belts although this was optional on purchase from new, I believe that if we fitted rear belts I would have to reregister it so that it stated 6 passengers. This is how I see it I am not sure if this is the law or just advisory.

I could seat 11, but there are only belts for 7, needless to say the most I have ever carried is 7....
